A Tribute to M.S.Subbulakshmi; 1916 -2004


The purpose of this blog is to provide a forum to share information and anecdotes about the legendary carnatic singer and philanthropist Smt. M.S.Subbulakshmi. If you are an admirer or a friend, a person who enjoyed her music or were in some way touched by her life, we invite you to add your comments and anecdotes for others to share.


This forum will be moderated on a regular basis and it is hoped the comments and contributions of others will creat a rich mosaic of information and insight into the life of this great personality who inspired so many, shared so much and made such profound impact on all who met her. We should add that this is a non commercial effort, the sole purpose of which is as a tribute to Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi in memory of her life and contribution.

It would be difficult to overstate the talent and the impact made by Smt. M.S.Subbulakshmi, not just in the field of carnatic music, but also as a philanthrophist and a person who placed her life at the service of her country and its people. She was both much larger than life and utterly human in her interaction with others.

Sep 16,2010 - 94th Birth anniversary of Smt. M S Subbulakshmi

Sep 16, 2010 was the 94th birth anniversary of Smt. M S Subbulakshmi.

The Hindu and Saregama India (formerly HMV) established ‘The Hindu Saregama M.S. Subbulakshmi Award' in her honor.

"The award, in the name of the legendary musician, will be presented annually to a promising Carnatic vocalist.

A jury comprising eminent musicians and art critics will select the recipient based on the artist's performances during the year, particularly those during the ‘Marghazhi music season'."

The Hindu and Saregama to institute M S Subbulakshmi Award

This award aligns well with what Smt. MS outlined in her acceptance speech when receiving the Sangita Kalanidhi award. That her request is that young musicians should be encouraged; that a peer of experts must select the most promising musicians and give them opportunities to perform. That this is very important for Carnatic music to flourish.

Dear Admin,
Thanks for posting the legend's speech in the website. For young persons like me who have never heard M.S.S's speech (I have heard her songs alone), its a treasure.
